WHO maintains that investment in health is a prerequisite for economic development. Recent research shows spending on health can bring a six-fold return on investment within 15 years. Conversely, disease is a drain on development — it hurts economies through lost productivity and health expenditures. Above all poor families spend a significant proportion of the annual household income on health care.
