Hoi An City, 10th January 2012 – Nearly eighty delegates from government, local and international experts and leaders of local hotels/ resorts gathered in Hoi An city to explore ways to act environmentally and socially responsible in hotel sector. Cost savings, environmental management and other related topics were discussed during the workshop.
The workshop Greening the Hotel Sector: Acting Environmentally and Socially Responsible organized by Hoi An City People’s Committee (HPC) with technical assistance from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is a part of Hoi An Eco-city Development Component within the framework of Policy advice on Environmental management: Green Industry Development Project (GI Project), an initiative to enable Vietnamese Government to adapt and adopt innovative GI-based policies and initiatives for sustainable industrial development in key sectors whilst reducing GHG and other emissions, reducing resource consumption and waste generation and reducing vulnerabilities to climate change.
Greening the Hotel Sector Workshop was, on one hand, to share international good practices regarding Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in sustainable tourism development. Modern global eco-concepts, action plans and benchmarks on energy, water use and waste management in hotels introduced by international experts attracted attention of audiences. Furthermore, to make it happen, a training course was implemented to sixteen hotels rated on a scale of 2-5 stars in Hoi An, and pilot technical consultancy services in 8 hotels and 1 laundry have been provided by the Viet Nam Cleaner Production Center (VNCPC). Only after five months, significant initial results were gained. For example, in Golf Hoi An Hotel, electricity cost was cut down from 60-90 million VND/ month to 40 – 56 million VND/month, 56% water use decreased by applying lower water flow in Vinh Hung Hotel, and Hoi An Pacific Hotel reduced 10% electricity use with 50% long life light bulbs.
On the other hand, the Hoi An city’s draft Standards of Green Enterprises were consulted with stakeholders. After being approved, the Green Enterprise Certificate will be awarded anually to honor socially and environmentally responsible enterprises.
