Da Lat city is one of three cities leading the way in implementing the national Green Growth Strategy. The action plan sets out a long-term vision for the city towards a green development pathway, at the same time increasing resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Mr. Bakhodir Burkhanov, UNDP Viet Nam Deputy Country Director welcomed the new draft. “Greening the system for urban planning will help promote sustainable urban density, effective zoning, green public spaces and vibrant streets. This will help make the city more functional and prosperous, while maintaining ecological balance.”

Participants made many useful comments, stressing the need to ensure that the plan fits into the local natural, economic and social context. Others called for the plan to be clearer, and technical terms fully explained.

Viet Nam is among a growing number of developing countries looking to spur investment in green innovation and improve the efficiency of natural resources use. Following the release of the Viet Nam Green Growth Strategy, the national Green Growth Action Plan was launched last year.

Localizing the Green Growth Action Plan needs close cooperation of many departments and stakeholder. Mr. Burkhanov stressed that “Implementation of the green growth plan will require the involvement of not only policy-makers, managers and city administrators, but also each and every citizen. As we move forward together, UNDP will continue to cooperate with the Government and people of Viet Nam on green growth to ensure a more sustainable future for all.”

The event provided an excellent opportunity for Da Lat City People’s Committee and local departments such as the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and Bidoup Nui Ba National Park Management Board to discuss the Action Plan and priorities for 2015 and beyond.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Yen, Vice chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People Committee, “green growth is not only about being green in agriculture and forests, but also in architecture and tourism”. He hoped the city’s Green Growth Action Plan would be implemented effectively with the technical support of UNDP.

The Green Growth Action Plan in Da Lat city has been developed under the  MPI-led project “Strengthening Capacity and Institutional Reform for Green Growth and Sustainable Development in Viet Nam” (CIGG) in partnership with UNDP and USAID.

The project will support capacity building and policy development for the effective implementation of Viet Nam’s national Green Growth Strategy and achievement of sustainable development goals. Assistance will be provided at national and provincial levels to integrate green growth and low-carbon development into sectoral and provincial green growth action plans.
