UNV Viet Nam Programme
UNV in Viet Nam

Mission - Promoting Volunteerism for Development (V4D) in Viet Nam, with a focus on Youth, by strengthening the environment for people to volunteer and by mobilizing national and international UN Volunteers to contribute to the development of the country.

Mobilizing Volunteers - More than 500 UN Volunteers, national and international, have served in the country since 1990. UN volunteers come from all walks of life, with various professional backgrounds, and share the same ideal of contributing to the development of Viet Nam, particularly to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Modalities of UN Volunteer assignments, both national and international, include: UN Volunteer Specialists (above 25 yrs old), UN Youth Volunteers (18-29 yrs old) and Online Volunteers. Vietnamese nationals can also become international UN Volunteers in other countries (please visit In Viet Nam, there is usually a team of 20-25 serving UN Volunteer Specialists and UN Youth Volunteers, both national and international. In addition, several UN Online Volunteers are mobilized for ad-hoc tasks on a regular basis. All UN Volunteers are placed within UN projects, with UN Agencies or with Project partners.

Programming for development - UNV also develops and administers specific projects, with the aim to demonstrate contribution of volunteerism to sustainable human development and to further promote volunteerism as a means of civic engagement and capacity building. UNV has had a close cooperation with the Central Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCYU), which led to the creation of the Viet Nam Volunteer Centre (VVC). The project “Strengthening Capacity of Volunteerism for Development in Viet Nam” (2009-2015) aimed at enhancing the infrastructure and capacity for volunteerism in Viet Nam, including the establishment of an online matching platform, training for volunteer leaders and promotion of V4D by VVC. Within the initiative Delivering as One, UNV has been implementing the project “Volunteer Support to Strengthening Local Capacity and Promoting Community Participation in Selected Areas of UN One Plan 2012-2016” to support the UN in Vietnam through technical assistance of UN volunteers.

Reaching out to the Youth and Civil Society, advocating for Volunteerism - UNV in Viet Nam directly reaches out to the Youth with activities such as the “Youth Employability Skills Project” to boost university students’ confidence in accessing better job opportunities, and workshops to discuss Youth role in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We actively collaborate with other UN Agencies, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and groups, and advocate for volunteer action and recognition of Volunteerism through our communications channels as well as events such as International Volunteer Day (IVD, 5th December) and support to the annual National Volunteer Awards (NVAs).
