UNV Communication and public speaking training: Learning how to convince in 60 seconds
Hands shaking on stage. Pearls of fear on the forehead. Hundreds of eyes watching every move. Even various professionals feel nervous when they think of public speaking, standing in front of an audience, delivering a speech. United Nations Volunteers (UNVs) also wanted to feel safer in such situations and raised their interest in receiving tailored tools to improve their communication and public speaking skills.

Therefore, the UNV office in Viet Nam organized a two-day training for their Volunteers and external partner organizations from 21-22 November 2017 in Ha Noi. The training equipped participants with specific tools they could immediately use so they felt more confident to communicate with internal and external stakeholders in an effective and empathetic way.

Participants learned through a mix of theory and interactive sessions for example how they could improve presenting themselves as well as how to convey clear messages to different audiences. Group exercises and delivering a concise and entertaining 60-seconds-speech (an “elevator pitch”) helped participants to deepen their knowledge. They interacted with colleagues from other agencies and external organizations – an opportunity for networking and potential partnership work in the future.

In addition to building capacity, the training also mentioned the idea to establish a public speaking club to improve communication and public speaking skills. UN Volunteers and young people could host the speaking club for themselves and use it as a platform for frequent practicing.
