On 11th August 2017, the celebration of International Youth Day event took place under the coordination of the United Nations agencies, Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.

The theme of International Youth Day 2017 is “Youth Building Peace” which is dedicated to celebrating young people’s contributions to conflict prevention and transformation as well as inclusion, social justice, and sustainable peace. In this context, Viet Nam celebrated International Youth Day with the theme of “Youth Empowerment for the Country’s Development”.

More than 500 young people have actively participated in the policy dialogue with the representatives from Government. The dialogue has made positive impact on recognition of the importance of youth empowerment from policy makers and youth themselves, and removing barriers so the youth can reach their potentials. Being the stars of the Day, young people have have demonstrated their needs, roles and contributions to the process of building and developing the country, especially the youth policies.

At the same time, outside the meeting hall were the unique booths of various youth organizations, clubs, teams and groups such as 2030 Youth Force Vietnam, ISee, Soap for Hope, Think Playground, etc. At the booth of United Nations, together with media publications, there were exciting games about 17 Sustainable Development Goals for participants. It was the young students in universities and high schools in Hanoi that helped the booth to run smoothly during the event.

On 9th and 10th August, 25 youth representatives from various backgrounds including ethnic minority groups, LGBT, people living with HIV, migrants and people with disabilities have participated a capacity-building training organized by the UN in Viet Nam. The training was aim to prepare the youth knowledge and skill not only for the policy dialogue but also facilitate them to build the capacity of their groups.

Youth commitment at the end of the event shows that youth are change agents and when the youth are empowered, they can do great things.
