An Interview with Mr. An Phan Thanh, a National United Nations Volunteer in Vietnam
“What I have learned from other volunteers and from my own hands-on experience is that, everyone, whether well-off or not, employed or not, can give a hand in helping others as long as they truly care.”

Mr. An is currently serving in Da Nang, Viet Nam as the National Coordination Officer (UN Volunteer) for the regional Partners For Prevention (P4P) Joint Program aiming at the prevention of violence against women and girls in Asia and the Pacific. A partnership among UN Women, UNV, UNFPA, UNDP at the regional level, in Viet Nam P4P provides technical assistance to a UN Women’s initiative in Da Nang, in collaboration with Da Nang Women’s Union. The joint programme brings together the combined strengths of the four UN agencies, along with governments and civil society to promote and implement more effective violence prevention programmes and policies. Mr. An acts as the P4P focal point for the activities being undertaken in Viet Nam. His primary task is to support Da Nang Women’s Union with coordination and successful implementation of the intervention on Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) prevention at the provincial-level, in particular on how to engage men and boys through male advocates clubs, to foster partnerships, capacity and build ownership around the intervention. As a United Nations Volunteer he also takes responsibility to support efforts to promote volunteerism for the prevention of VAWG and transformation of harmful social norms.
