UNIDO support to improve Viet Nam’s coffee quality through transfer of Pyrolysis Technology

Buon Me Thuot, 10th Nov 2017 - Despite Viet Nam’s leading global position in Robusta coffee exports, the sector is at risk. Because of changing weather patterns, Vietnamese farmers and processors face environmental and economic challenges like water shortage, soil degradation and income losses due to unreliable drying methods and inherent coffee quality and price decline.

Therefore, November 10, 2017 in Buon Ma Thuot City - United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), REPIC, Hanns R. Neumann Foundation (HRNS), Viet Hien Company Ltd., Viet Nam Cleaner Production Center (VNCPC) and SOFIES, organized a dissemination workshop on " Pyrolysis Technology improves coffee quality" under the project "Minimization of Industrial Waste for Low Carbon Production. The workshop aims to popularize Pyrolysis, a successfully transferred technology from Switzerland. The technology valorizes coffee husk by producing heat for coffee drying and biochar, which can be used as soil enhancer. This has been identified as a promising solution for improving coffee quality and improving soil fertility while minimizing CO2 emissions.

The local Viet Hien Company Ltd received technology transfer and developed the prototype successfully in the country. The pilot pyrolysis equipment have been disseminated in Dac Lac province and exported to Brazil.

Participants in the workshop includes representatives of local authority, relevant Ministries and Sectors, the Viet Nam Coffee Coordination Board, specialists and researchers from institutes, universities and organizations; international organizations and coffee processing enterprises and farmers.

The project “"Minimization of Industrial Waste for Low Carbon Production” funded by SECO and implemented by UNIDO. In Viet Nam, the project supports two sectors including rice and coffee.

The aim of the Project is to achieve step-reductions in the generation of industrial waste and by-products, including organic materials, as well as to foster their valorization. This serves the triple purpose of (1) improving the local environment, (2) mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and (3) economic benefits by utilizing industrial bio-waste.
