Ha Long city, Quang Ninh Province, Viet Nam, October 2011— According to the 2009 Population and Housing Census, young people aged between 10 to 24 years account for nearly 30 percent of the population. Young people in Viet Nam are the most mobile group, as many leave home for further studies, while others migrate seasonally or permanently for better job opportunities. Sexual and reproductive health norms and behavior are changing rapidly among young people in Viet Nam. One-third of young people still face barriers when trying to access reproductive health information or services they require and deserve.

The 2011 Annual Report for the United Nations in Viet Nam provides an overview of key development results achieved in 2011 with UN support. The report highlights how the UN is contributing to a better life for the people of Viet Nam by helping to address issues such as inequality and inequity, creating decent jobs, enhancing social protection, improving the quality of education and health services, and effectively responding to climate change and natural disasters. The UN is supporting Viet Nam in several ways, from providing global expertise and policy advice to technical assistance and capacity development in key priority areas.

The ‘Delivering as One’ (DaO) initiative brings together the expertise, experience and capacities of UN agencies in Viet Nam to provide more coordinated and effective assistance. Through greater harmonization of its work and alignment with Viet Nam’s development priorities, the UN is achieving more coherence, better results and greater impact – for the benefit of all people in Viet Nam.
As Viet Nam continues to experience rapid social, economic and demographic change, the UN in Viet Nam aims to support the country to ensure balanced, equitable and sustainable development so that no-one is left behind. With Viet Nam changing, the UN must also evolve with it. The UN needs to provide relevant support to the Government and people of Viet Nam to address the challenges ahead and continue to progress towards higher levels of human development. To that effect, the UN is continuing to focus more on providing upstream policy advice to the Government, is speaking with One Voice on key policy issues, and is strengthening its focus on the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

Community spaces design contest for an exciting hanoi
Ha Noi, October 17/10/2017 - Aiming at improving the living environment and bringing culture and art to the community towards a better urban future, United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) successfully developed the project “Promote participatory, community-based and youth-led approach in safe, greening public spaces in Hoan Kiem district toward a pro-poor, inclusive and sustainable urban development” (hereinafter called Public Spaces project) under the Block by Block program with Mojang, the makers of the videogame Minecraft.

Harsh punishment for child offenders doesn’t prevent further criminality
The age at which a child, can be held criminally liable is a controversial issue around the world. Within Viet Nam, this issue is currently being grappled with in the Penal Code amendments. Some argue that a "get tough on crime" approach is necessary to punish children to prevent further criminality.
However, international research shows that because of their developmental stages, labelling and treating children as criminals at an early age can have serious negative impacts on their development and successful rehabilitation.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message for World AIDS Day, observed on 1 December
Thirty-five years since the emergence of AIDS, the international community can look back with some pride. But we must also look ahead with resolve and commitment to reach our goal of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.
There has been real progress in tackling the disease. More people than ever are on treatment. Since 2010, the number of children infected through mother to child transmission has dropped by half. Fewer people die of AIDS related causes each year. And people living with HIV are living longer lives.
The number of people with access to life-saving medicines has doubled over the past five years, now topping 18 million. With the right investments, the world can get on the fast-track to achieve our target of 30 million people on treatment by 2030. Access to HIV medicines to prevent mother to child transmission is now available to more than 75 per cent of those in need.
