Ho Chi Minh City, 24 March - A workshop was held in Ho Chi Minh City on March 24th to promote gender equality in the media. The event was organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications of Viet Nam (MOIC) in cooperation with UNESCO and Oxfam in Viet Nam. The workshop provided the opportunity to elaborate upon the roles and responsibilities of the media in promoting gender equality in all aspects of life and in the media in particular. Participants discussed the Gender-Sensitive Indicators for Media of Viet Nam developed by MOIC, with support from UNESCO and Oxfam, based on UNESCO’s Gender-Sensitive Indicators (GSIM) for Media.
The Gender-Sensitive Indicators for Media are a set of indicators for media institutions to assess their gender sensitivity and responsiveness, which fall into two categories: i) Category A measures actions to foster equality within media organizations such as gender balance at the decision-making level, gender equality in work and working conditions, and equal pay; and ii) Category B assesses gender portrayals in media content, particularly in the news and advertisements. Participants analysed advantages and challenges to applying the indicators in their media institutions. Attendees also made recommendations for implementation of the GSIM including continuing to raise awareness on the GISM among media institutions, media education institutions, media associations and clubs, and any other media content production organization, and to apply the indicators gradually by piloting selected indicators in the first stage, among others. Participants agreed that access to and use of the GSIM would not only help the media but also raise awareness and encourage behaviours and actions that promote gender equality in society as a whole.
