Ha Noi, 6 December 2011 – At the year-end Consultative Group Meeting today, the UN and other development partners shared ideas and discussed with Vietnamese leaders the development challenges and opportunities facing the country. The UN statement – Accelerating Economic Restructuring and Poverty Reduction – included a review of the current macro-economic environment, the impacts of macro-economic instability on the poor, poverty trends and challenges, anti-corruption and aid effectiveness.
The statement recognizes the need for inclusive, green, pro-poor development that promotes balanced rural and urban development, and generates jobs for the poor. It also advocates for greater attention to tackle entrenched and chronic forms of poverty, as well as emerging forms of poverty and vulnerability such as urban and migrant poverty, so that Vietnamese people across the country have the opportunity to realize a better quality of life.
