The United Nations Independent Expert on Minority Issues, Ms Gay McDougall, has completed her report to the UN's Human Rights Council following a ten-day mission to Viet Nam last year. Ms McDougall visited Viet Nam during 5-15 July 2010 to examine the human rights situation of country's numerous minority groups.
In addition to meetings with senior Government officials, UN staff, representatives from various ministries, the donor community and non-governmental organizations, she travelled to regions with significant minority populations, including the provinces of Dien Bien in the Northern Highlands, Tra Vinh in the Mekong Delta region and Gia Lai and Kon Tum provinces in the Central Highlands. Her report will be shared at the 16th session of the Human Rights Council during 25 February -28 March, 2011.
In addition to Ms. McDougall, the UN Independent Expert on Human Rights and Extreme Poverty, Magdalena Sepúlveda, also visited Viet Nam last year, during 23-29 August. Her report and recommendations will be presented at the Human Rights Council's 17th session during May-June, 2011.More news
