8 June, 2009 - The last eight months have been, without doubt, the most difficult and challenging period that the world economy has gone through since the 1930s. Governments around the world have had to act quickly and, in many cases, boldly to avoid the collapse of the international financial system and, with it, the world economy. Concerted efforts by the international community, culminating in the G20 London meeting in April, have facilitated a coordinated global response to the crisis that is already starting to bear fruit. As we gather for this year’s Informal Mid-Year Consultative Group Meeting, we see signs that the worst of the crisis might be over and that, slowly, the world economy is steering towards a path of gradual recovery.
