A UN Joint Visit to Dak Lak, the “Coffee Holy Land”

The TEE PCG members visit Café Control in Dak Lak to learn about coffee inspection and quality control.
26 June, 2009 - Dang Le Nguyen Vu, the founder of Trung Nguyen Coffee – one of the top Vietnamese coffee brands – wants Dak Lak to become the “Coffee Holy Land”.

“I want it to be the place that all the coffee lovers in the world turn to when it comes to issues related to coffee”, he said passionately at a meeting on 9th June with members of a joint UN mission organized by the UN Programme Coordination Group on Trade, Employment and Enterprise Development (TEE PCG) and led by UN Resident Coordinator John Hendra.

Promoting Vietnamese coffee to the global market is what both Vu and local authorities are trying to do. “Viet Nam is the second biggest coffee producer in the world but our turn-over from coffee export is only from USD 1.8 to 2.2 billion a year, while Switzerland, who is not a coffee producer, earns USD 12 billion a year from coffee”, noted Mr. Le Ngoc Cu, Chairman of Dak Lak People’s Committee.

An Assessment of the Macroeconomic Situation

8 June, 2009 - The last eight months have been, without doubt, the most difficult and challenging period that the world economy has gone through since the 1930s. Governments around the world have had to act quickly and, in many cases, boldly to avoid the collapse of the international financial system and, with it, the world economy. Concerted efforts by the international community, culminating in the G20 London meeting in April, have facilitated a coordinated global response to the crisis that is already starting to bear fruit. As we gather for this year’s Informal Mid-Year Consultative Group Meeting, we see signs that the worst of the crisis might be over and that, slowly, the world economy is steering towards a path of gradual recovery.
